This is a reverse-gilded sign. Glass was etched to represent geological features found in the coastal regions of the UK. The etched surface of the glass is made in reverse. Loose gold leaf is then added in a variety of carats to confer colour and depth to the form. Everything was applied in reverse to the back of the glass.
