A chance to see a carpet weaver at work is a rare opportunity in Russia, and the Siberian Carpet Manufactory, the country’s only enterprise where the original weaving traditions are still in use, is the perfect place to do so. It is most exciting to observe the weavers making knots - they have to make around 8000 of them every day - and choose the blend of colours to make the most characterful patterns. The manufacturer’s technology makes it possible to use up to 100 colours of yarn in the carpet. By comparison, in machine carpet weaving no more than 12 colours can be used.
