A touch of Japanese raku in Vilnius

Raku is a special Japanese firing technique for ceramics, usually used to make tea ceremony bowls. However, it is more than a ceramic technique, it is also a philosophy: simplicity, restraint and respect for the material are important in raku. Beatričė Kelerienė, an experienced ceramicist who studied in Japan, will immerse you in the delicate and distinctive world of raku pottery in this 3-session workshop. Her ceramic works have been repeatedly awarded in Japan, and raku philosophy is very close to her heart. Starting with a lecture on raku ceramics, tea drinking and the best choice of bowls, the workshop moves on to moulding a bowl. Once you have cast the dish you want, it is biscuit fired, and later glazed with raku pigments. You will be able to place the bowls in the kiln, then in the sawdust, and pull them out to see for yourself how the beautiful surface of the bowl is created. The finished dish can be sent to you at an additional cost. The course is organised as 3 sessions lasting 2 hours each, for a total of 6 hours with Beatričė.
