Introducing glass marquetry
- Myriam is greatly inspired by the richness of cultural heritage around the world
- She is a self-taught glass marquetry maker
- She rapidly distinguished herself by her art deco style
Myriam Hubert orginally worked for humanitarian organisations in crisis situations. On her last mission to Lebanon, it was the visit of a mosaic workshop that inspired her towards the path of craftsmanship. Already fascinated by the heritage of ancient civilisations, the discovery of this ancient knowhow awakened her desire to learn the art of chiselling. Myriam then trained in working with various materials, and glass quickly became her favourite. Over these years of experimenting, she gradually refined her own concept: glass marquetry. Her unique process is where the art of stained glass and mosaic meet to form decorative wall panels. Designed for interiors, Myriam's pieces explore plays of light and colours. She also works on incorporating mirrors into glass.
Interview
Did you learn from a Master craftsman?
I am entirely self-taught. The learning phase was quite laborious. That said, it gave me total freedom. Freedom in the sense of innovating. I was able to move forward and experiment without codes, without rules, without a bible.
How do you balance tradition and innovation in your creations?
The tradition lies in the material, I use the same glass and the same tools as stained-glass artists, which have been the same since the beginning of time. I innovate in the way I assemble my pieces. The assembly, the technique, the aesthetic style with the mirror inlays, allow a totally innovative finish.
In what ways is your craft related to the territory?
By territory, I understand 'my artistic universe', and this draws on ancient civilisations, from Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia. This makes me vibrate. I try to pay tribute to these immense centuries of heritage and culture.
According to you, what defines a well made object?
To me, it lies in the coherence between all the elements: the initial design, the patience and meticulousness, the material. If these main elements are in sync, you get the vibration. Vibration comes from a successful project.
