Creating beauty from the void

  • Mark merges technology, theory and craft in his approach
  • Every creation is a surprise, even to him
  • He values teaching as part of his practice

Mark Newman creates pieces that are objects of great beauty but also offer commentary on social and political systems around him. He is affected by a condition called aphantasia which causes the mind’s eye to be blind. This means he cannot visualise his pieces before they are created, a potentially large barrier to making jewellery pieces. But Mark has put in place structures to aid his process. He uses research into aesthetics to guide his design choices, and CAD to create elements which he then manipulates in real time. He sees this is as a key tool in his process and stresses that what he creates in the virtual world needs to be possible to make by his own hand. As a result of this novel ‘birthing process’ his pieces hold a unique resonance.

You are affected by aphantasia – does this impact your practice?
I cannot do simple things like visualise or draw out a piece. I use CAD as something like an external brain to help me create. I also believe that as a maker seeing the world differently can be an advantage.
What inspires you to create?
Each piece I make is like I am manifesting something I never had. It is more than just expressing myself, making is a deep need within me. I find the process of creating an object hugely fulfilling.
What is special about jewellery for you?
Jewellery holds so many contradictions. It is a great medium for commenting on social and political hierarchies. I actually have a ring called Hierarchy! But the artform versus the commerciality of jewellery continuously intrigues and perplexes me.
Are there things about your work that people do not know?
So many! I pull from so many different sources for creating my work and also for the concepts behind the pieces. My mind is constantly buzzing. So I need to filter these messages for an audience, to curate the core meanings.
