Les papiers de Marie
Paper cutter

A paper world of dreams

  • Marie Beun is a self-taught paper cutter
  • She took up the craft one day out of the blue
  • Her creations reflect her dreamy imagination

A self-taught paper cutting artist, Marie Beun describes her first interest in the craft as nothing but a voice in her head, like a calling. After thinking at first that such talent was innate and not taught, she worked for hours on end for a year in order to master this craft. Working so intensively confirmed her interest and talent for paper cutting, and she is now an accomplished craftswoman. Her creations are a way of expressing a world of imagination and dream-like images. She has always been fascinated by fairy tales, and describes them as allowing oneself a bit of dream in a sometimes thorny life. Paper cutting is more than an interest to Marie, it is a real passion and an addictive activity that she enjoys sharing through courses and exhibitions.

What drew you to this craft?
It was the mystery that attracted me. Unlike a drawing where you can tell it is drawn, with a cut-out you do not instinctively understand how it is made. It was this mystery and my curiosity that drew me in.
What do you like most about this craft?
Paper cutting is addictive. The drawing is reversed, so perceptions are reversed, and magic happens every time. For a while I was cutting paper in my head all the time, but now I have found a balance!
What is your artistic style?
I was told that I had a style quite close to art nouveau but I am also attracted by everything linked to tales. Tales were my first inspiration for cut-out illustrations. I like the abstract and the magical, the details of a dreamlike and lunar world.
Could you share a memorable moment?
I was making a cut-out that fell off my table and tore. At first I was upset, but then I glued it back together and now you cannot see where it tore. A work of art does not mean there are no flaws in the piece, on the contrary!
