Laima Grigone

Ceramicist

Made with love

  • Laima creates handmade ceramics for everyday
  • She set up her own workshop in 2013
  • Some of her creations spend nine days in the kiln

While Laima was studying for her BA she was researching the Arts and Crafts movement and the Mingei movement, as well as ecological art. She was moved by the philosophy behind handmade pieces and the idea of making art a part of our everyday experience. Pottery came to Laima’s mind as it is part of her people’s daily life and culture. With the help of funding, Laima was able to purchase studio equipment after finishing her university degree. She set up her studio in 2013 in a building at her childhood home, that had stood empty for 11 years. Together with her family, they renovated the structure. She admits that it was the hardest year of her life, because suddenly she wasn’t surrounded anymore by the supportive community from university and she had to set up everything from zero.

Is pottery a tradition in Latvia?
I have heard that Latvia has the highest numbers of potters per inhabitants, I don’t know if that is true, but certainly it could be. Pottery and craft in general are very much alive here, people are still very in touch with nature and traditions.
What do you love most about this craft?
I love the feeling I am able to invest into objects and how my clients are able to tune into them. The joy it brings to their daily life. It is something I never thought about before starting pottery, but now it is slowly becoming a huge part of my life.
What is a memorable moment in your career?
I remember receiving my first email from a client saying that her favourite daily moment was in the morning using my cups, and that it is like a meditation for her. It was the first of many kind messages.
What is your vision for the future?
I believe in handmade, well made, slowly made. I hope for a future where all things around us are made in the spirit of gratitude and a joy in honouring nature. I believe that by cultivating an attitude of care towards objects it will reflect in our relationships and also our wordly vision.
