Bahk Jongsun spent a lot of time alone from an early age, most of that time was devoted to painting. Playing the guitar was his other great love, something he still enjoys a great deal. It was clear to him during his school days that he would like to go to art college, so he focussed hard on his drawings. Eventually, he decided to combine his draftsman skills and work as a carpenter. Everyday he carefully unfolds his drawing notes – a ritual as embedded as getting up in the morning – he breathes in inspiration from the day: from the weather, the temperature, the brightness – everything that touches his senses. He feels at one with the wood. His works are unique and recognisable, he is very proud if he hears someone saying "This is definitely Bahk Jongsun."
Interview
- Why did you choose woodcraft?
- At first, I was only making frames for my paintings and drawings. By chance, an order for furniture came in and I made it. So I became interested in doing three-dimensional work. I have continued to do it because I am good at it.
- What special technique have you learned?
- One of the ways to supplement the crack of a tree is to use this technique called a butterfly joint, it is a traditional Korean woodworking method. This method can be applied as needed but in a delicate way as it can visually harm the whole work.
- Who are your clients?
- They are domestic and overseas businessmen and writers. I also do a lot of work through collaborations with architects.
- What do you like best about your work?
- It gives me pleasure to imagine the work I will create while dealing with the various materials and characteristics of wood. The process of imagining and creating is enjoyable.
