Youngho Park was born in Cheongju, a city renowned for its crafts in Korea. From a young age, he dreamed of becoming a craftsman, inspired by various exhibitions and events. After majoring in craft design in college, he won the main prize at the Cheongju Craft Biennale, an esteemed international event held in his hometown. This marked the beginning of his earnest journey as an artisan. With a passion for harmonising colours in fashion and home decor, Youngho found his niche in glassworking, where he put his talent to good use. The transparency of glass allows him to beautifully express layers of his favourite colours. Currently, Youngho is a resident artisan at the Korean Crafts Center in Cheongju, where he also trains students in lampworking.

Is there a special glassworking skill that you master?
Lampworking is a traditional glass craft technique with various methods. I specialise in the marbling technique, which creates gradations by mixing glass to achieve different concentrations. By using 3D modelling on top of these traditional techniques, I can achieve intricate forms that are difficult to make with conventional methods.
What was the first piece you created?
The first piece I made was Memory Drop. I was inspired by the way ink drips into water which reminded me of how my memories blur over time. Memories do not fade all at once but gradually disappear with less frequent recall. To express the desire to preserve precious memories, I created a shape where the beginning and the end are connected.
What do you think makes a piece of work excellent?
I believe it is one that emanates a sense of moving energy. Even static pieces can possess a dynamic quality that deeply resonates with viewers. To me, a truly successful work is one that feels alive, capturing and holding the viewer's attention. I try to create pieces that encapsulate this lively energy, making each work feel vibrant and compelling.
How is your craft related to the area you live in?
Cheongju City has a studio that supports glass crafts, addressing equipment needs and providing substantial support to artists and artisans. I am proud to be born in Cheongju, a city known for its craftsmanship, and to have grown up to become a craftsman here. This city's dedication to the arts has greatly influenced my work and allowed me to thrive in my craft.
