Xavier Castro’s translucent porcelain pieces evoke cellular structures, marine exoskeletons or fossilised sedimentation. They seem to breathe, moving beyond objects to become hybrid entities that blur the line between the artificial and the biological. Xavier studied visual communication as well as blown glass, marquetry, entomology and porcelain, and has exhibited his work in France and Quebec. His practice combines these multifaceted experiences and is akin to a laboratory of experimentation and transformation, in which he commits to long, meticulous manufacturing protocols and blends traditional methods with technical trials. “Accidents and unforeseen contractions become the necessary scars of a living form, patiently cultivated,” he says. By accepting and provoking the element of chance during the firing process, Xavier allows the laws of physics to collaborate on the final work.
