Vladimir Petrov

Leatherworker

From a watch strap to accessories

  • Vladimir is a specialist of bespoke leather items
  • He uses leather to make functional pieces
  • His pieces are made with passion and are repairable

When buying his first expensive watch, Vladimir Petrov did not like how the strap looked on his wrist. Generally inspired by intellectual challenge and learning new things, he wanted to make a better strap himself. By destroying a sofa to get the leather and taking threads and needles from the household sewing machine, Vladimir made his first watch strap – according to him, the result was horrible. Ever since, Vladimir continued to train as a self-taught leatherworker by experimenting, making errors, correcting them and learning from many masters. He strives to make every single detail correctly, even if it might not be visible, to create the bespoke leather accessories that he has become known for which make his customers happy.

Why did you choose leather?
When you aim to make items that can be passed from one generation to another as an heirloom, leather is a material that can withstand the teeth of time. But I also work with other materials like cork, textiles, artificial leather and even combine them.
How do you express tradition and innovation?
I do everything by hand using traditional tools and techniques. However, cross-discipline is an important part of my practice. Having an IT and printing industry background, I apply these experiences to the craft for printed appliqué, laser cutting or using a software for pattern making.
Could leatherwork be considered in danger?
Yes. Information on how to make things is more available today but how to craft right is not - unless you live in France. Techniques are also closely guarded by experienced artisans that are not willing to disclose them. Some techniques have already been forever lost.
What is your approach to making?
I visualise all aspects of an item to the tiniest detail before I make patterns and start cutting the material. When it comes to bespoke items, I work closely with my clients in order to grasp what they really envision and to meet their needs.
