Shimmering creations sparked by curiousty

  • Virginie embellishes diverse surfaces through embroidery
  • She launched a rare insect series to advocate for endangered pollinators
  • She selects a new creative theme each year

Virginie Renault's embroidery practice is driven by her meticulous craftsmanship and intellectual curiosity, as she embroiders on linen, paper, wood and even hardcover books. After graduating with a degree in applied arts from the École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques in Paris, Virginie managed a bookstore where her artistic sensibilities were enriched by imaginative stories with abundant illustrations. "Inspired by a documentary about the petites mains, skilled artisans of haute couture, I trained with an Indian master embroiderer who taught me the aari technique and goldwork embroidery," she explains. Since 2015, Virginie has been working on bespoke couture projects, hosting creative retreats and embellishing products for luxury brands. "I like to embark on a new personal embroidery project every year," she says.

Does innovation play a role in your embroidery?
I always experiment, so I never get bored! Applying my embroidery in new ways keeps it exciting and engaging. For example, I love using my work to illustrate the richness of literature or contemporary environmental issues.
What inspired your rare insect series?
I was struck by a report on the decline of insect populations, so I launched a project to embroider bees, beetles, moths and other endangered pollinators. I shared my journey on Instagram to raise awareness of this ecological disaster while showcasing the beauty of these tiny creatures.
How do books influence your work today?
My love for literature often finds its way into my projects. For instance, in 2024, I recreated classic book covers embroidered with original illustrations and presented them in frames. In 2025, I embroidered designs directly onto the covers of hardbound books.
Do you collaborate with other artisans?
I love working with other artisans to push the boundaries of our crafts. My collaboration with paper sculptor Lauren Collin yields very poetic pieces. I also work with cabinetmaker Steven Leprizé, which requires me to adapt my techniques. It is captivating!
