Glass at the service of design

  • Daring is Vincent's watchword in life and work
  • Before going to work he studies – a lot
  • His creations are not functional but works of art

Human character and human being in all their facets are for Vincent Breed the starting point of all of his works. They are the elements that most fascinate him and stimulate him in his creativity. His pieces – which are truly unique – express the challenge of human beings who over the centuries have always faced the impossible. What seems insurmountable can actually be done and therefore the concept of impossible remains unexplored. Through his art, made with blown glass, an ancient material that humans have manipulated for centuries, Vincent investigates the limits without limits. Its realisations are therefore unique and not functional – just decorative. Vincent’s art is rich in study, maniacal precision reveals great work.

What kind of relationship do you have with glass?
What interests me in glass is its similarity with the human character, its apparent fragility and lightness, its ability to preserve its natural transparency or to cultivate a secret through opacity. I like its character, its timelessness, its ability to be a certain reflection of its environment or of the world.
What are your sources of inspiration?
Human beings and its complexities. In my sculptural work, I seek to question our relationship to reality through human behaviour. I seek to confront myself with the material, as if I needed to surpass myself to go further in its understanding, that of the world and mine.
How are tradition and innovation expressed in your work?
The technique of blown glass is very old and does not change, but the creation changes very often. You do a lot of different things with the same ancient technique. Creativity always changes, but the means to achieve it does not.
What do you suggest to young people who want to do your job?
I have a lot of interns working with me. I believe in young people a lot. But the important thing is that they have creativity, otherwise you are a "worker", who will always do the same work. This job has costs and if you want to live with it you have to have a lot of creativity.
