Following years of experimenting with colour sequences and pigment mixtures, the unique Unison Colour soft pastel was created in 1986 by artist John Hersey. After years of not finding a pastel he was happy with, John decided to make his own. Recognised for their smooth, buttery texture and intense pigmentation, today, the pastels made by Unison Colour are loved and respected by artists worldwide. The soft pastels are handmade by an experienced and dedicated small team of local people, some of whom have worked for the Hersey family for many years, continuing a great creative hub with a passion for colour and excellence.
Nestled in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, the 200-year-old Thorneyburn Rectory, Old Coach House, and barns are where Unison Colour is based. These wild surroundings inspired John Hersey. The constantly changing light and soft tonal hues of the fells and moorland led to over 300 harmonious soft pastel colours being created by John and his team. John often said: “The purpose is to realise the light. The heart of colour is light. The dance of light is colour.”
