Today, Sorin Chiuzbăian creates modern wood objects rooted in tradition, with a focus on contemporary design and functionality. He is a graduate of the Art High School in Baia Mare, as well as of the sculpture department at the Faculty of Arts and Design in Timișoara, where he also earned his master’s degree. While his formal education provided a strong foundation in visual language and material understanding, Sorin’s true skill in woodworking emerged through hands-on studio experimentation. Since he opened his workshop in 2016, he has expanded his vision. “I am inspired by my parents’ approach to life and work, as well as by visionary artists like Constantin Brâncuși and Salvador Dalí, from whom I learned that authenticity and inner coherence are essential to any creative process,” Sorin explains. Currently working alongside an apprentice, he enjoys passing on the values and techniques that bring meaningful, lasting pieces to life.

- In what way is your craft linked to your country?
- My studio and works reflect a balance between honouring local roots and exploring new creative paths. I use local wood because I feel connected to the area where I live, but I am open to integrating exotic woods that give my pieces a unique character. I strive to reveal each material’s story and energy, which makes my art both authentic and surprising.
- Do you specialise in any techniques?
- Even with woodworking machinery, many stages are still done by hand. Manual finishing is essential, as it brings out details and quality. A key skill is reading the wood like a map – it has fibres, knots and grain directions that must be understood and respected. Each piece requires a specific approach, so I combine different techniques to create a balance between function and aesthetics.
- How would you define what you do?
- My practice is a dialogue between matter and idea. Wood carries a story – I listen closely to this and perpetuate it. I create pieces with soul, that are made to last, bring joy and say something about myself and those who choose them. It is not just work, it is an art form and a way of living and feeling.
- What do people not know about your practice?
- Behind a seemingly simple object are hours of silent work, sketches, tests, failures and countless adjustments. Each stage demands creativity, patience and perseverance. Beyond that come supplier relations, deliveries, logistics, late nights and early mornings. It is a committed, organised way of life that requires constant discipline.
