Simona Bellini

Ceramicist | Breggia, Switzerland

Textured ceramics, organic forms

  • Simona is a multifaceted artist and craftswoman
  • Her pieces are inspired by nature
  • She enjoys sharing her craft through teaching

Simona Bellini was born in a creative family, and started working with clay early on. Her passion for the material – which she describes as having always been her favourite – only grew over time, becoming her main artistic focus. Initially working with utilitarian ceramics, she made a collection of plates and bowls adorned with vibrant engobes and glazed with crystalline, which was showcased in various local galleries and fairs. Slowly, Simona transitioned to contemporary sculptural ceramics, with a focus on creating different types of textures that recreate natural effects. A huge source of inspiration for her is nature. Her organic sculptures suggesting nature and its forms are now presented in galleries and cultural centres in Switzerland and abroad.

Where did you learn your craft?
In my life I have had many teachers, but the first one was my father Paolo Bellini from whom I took inspiration and a desire to model clay as a child. He used to model in clay and then took his works to the smelter to make them into bronze sculptures.
What are some aspects of your work that you love?
I am fascinated by the firing processes and the transformations of clay in the kiln, the alchemy of the elements coming together, changing colour, and creating mind-blowing effects. I also love the exchange with the audience, giving others emotions through the forms I make.
Would you call yourself more of a craftswoman or an artist?
Both, but as my artistic journey evolved, so did my focus, transitioning from utilitarian objects to intricate ceramic sculptures. This shift prompted me to explore new avenues, leading me to exhibit my work in galleries and cultural centres.
How do you feel about the world you work in?
Artistic professions are undoubtedly always stimulating, but at the same time, pursuing the dream of being an artist is not always easy. One must be persistent and never give up. You need time to both create and promote your work. At times, it can be challenging.
