Pascal Rößler

Wahr und Wundervoll
Linocut printmaker

An expression of faith

  • Pascal is a self-taught craftsman
  • He specialises in linocut
  • His preference is bold typography

Before studying media conception, Pascal Rößler began his professional life as an electronics technician. In 2020, Pascal started “Wahr und Wundervoll”, a passion project combining his belief in God with his love for art and creativity, using linocut printing. "My faith's authentic and creative expression is important to me," he says about his art. “The Bible is true to me and literally wonderful.” Pascal wants to give the Bible more space in everyday life and encourage reading, living and sharing God's word. Pascal was introduced to linocut at elementary school and he developed his skills through learning by doing. “However, I don't want to limit myself to just linocut in the long term,” Pascal dreams about future creative expansion.

What do you want to achieve with your craft?
My art should make people curious. At first glance, only the print motif can be seen, and viewers can only read the Bible text in the background by looking closer. I want to make God's word visible.
What inspires you?
I love typography and minimalist design: simple, reduced, but bold. Analogue has priority for me since the world around us is inevitably becoming digital. I collect thoughts when I walk through cities or sit in a café.
Why did you choose linocut printing?
It was important to me to find an analogue printing process. Every motif is made by hand with linocut, from drawing to carving to printing. Deviations in the colour application and printed image bring out unique characteristics.
How do you reconcile tradition and innovation?
I attribute tradition to my belief in God and the art of linocut printing. I develop innovation in the implementation, combining faith and art. My belief in God remains unchanged. But with art, I want to be free and create something new.
