A silk-lined rock spirit

  • Myriam is a graphic designer-turned-textile artist
  • She collaborates with musicians and other artists
  • Her craft offers her an emotional outlet in the form of creative expression

After a first career as a graphic designer, in 2015 Myriam Jung felt is was time to explore new horizons and widen her techniques. Textile was her natural choice, attracted by its endless possibilities and textures. She works on all the facets of making her creations, from the graphic design and illustration to paper cutting, the painting and collage, as well as sewing and photography that are required to make her pieces visually impactful. Her studio Dadadésir is defined by a vibrant and intuitive personality, just like the dada artistic movement that inspired her. "I refuse labels and fixed ideas," says Myriam. Her works are always limited series with their own story and poetic development. "My work is greatly inspired by music and rhythm, and I love to see my creations dancing to the music underneath the spotlights," Myriam adds.

How did you start your craft?
After a first decade devoted mainly to printed graphics, I wanted to explore media beyond paper. That is when I turned to textiles, a world that immediately attracted me because of its creative and sensory possibilities.
Is your work more traditional or innovative?
For me, tradition is expressed through the scarf – a timeless accessory steeped in history, to which I bring a contemporary twist. Modern, rock and always a touch of magic. It is my way of bringing together heritage and audacity.
What is creation to you?
What people do not realise is that I create because it is vital for me to do so. I am hyperactive, sometimes anxious or gloomy, and working at my craft helps me channel all these emotions. It is my outlet, my remedy, and above all it is what makes me happy and helps me find my balance.
How do you feel about craftsmanship in upcoming years?
I do not think it is in danger, as long as artists continue to express themselves with passion and authenticity. Creativity is a living force that is always renewed, and each new generation brings its own vision. As long as this creative energy exists, it will endure, evolve and adapt.
