An innovative twist on glass in furniture pieces

  • Manon and Gauthier make decorative pieces using glass in combination with other materials
  • They reuse glass scraps to create their own custom surfaces
  • The duo met at the French National Glass School

In 2019, Manon Fernandez and Gauthier Dietschi founded Studio Nosqua in France where they handcraft bespoke, small-series pieces such as light fixtures, furniture and interior design elements. In their production process, they work exclusively with French suppliers and partners. By applying a variety of surface techniques to their glasswork, Manon and Gauthier play with perspective in their creations, offering dynamic visual and tactile experiences. “The objects of our daily life should be an extension of our gestures,” they say. Their Solis console requires the placement of 716 vertical glass dominoes – a delicate, painstaking process and testament to their precision. They embrace innovative technology and have recreated obsolete glass fusing tools through 3D printing, while also reviving traditional techniques such as hammer bushing and glass shelling, as seen in their Érèbe lamp.

How does your practice bridge the worlds of craft and design?
Our practice is at the crossroads of craft, design and art. We create functional objects while giving a lot of importance to the aesthetics of our pieces. Researching movement, texture and visual vibrations is at the heart of our exploration of the material.
What are the challenges of working with glass?
Glass is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Even the smallest change can lead to the loss of its transparency. It takes a lot of patience to shape glass into the desired form and bring back its glossy finish.
Does experimenting with glass come naturally to you?
Researching glasswork is something we truly enjoy – it comes to us instinctively. Each new idea drives us to explore different facets of glass. Through experimenting with glass scraps, we are now able to develop our own custom surfaces.
How would you describe your clientele?
Our clients appreciate exceptional, handmade pieces and products made in France. They are looking for timeless, bespoke and one-of-a-kind creations that integrate seamlessly into the spaces they occupy.
