Linda Ķivule

Ceramicist

Porcelain that seems to be alive

  • Linda graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia
  • She works with porcelain casting, stone mass and clay
  • Her work is her hobby at the same time

Linda Ķivule represents the young generation of Latvian ceramicists. She already gained public notice during her second year of the studies at the Art Academy of Latvia. It was her delicate and clever plates, reminding striped and checked papers from notebooks that caught the public's attention. Since this time in 2017, she has graduated from the Academy, opened her own workshop, and plans to start her Master studies this year. Her creations in porcelain truly seem to be alive – so airy, so refined and real. The bite on the edge of the bowl really looks as if some animal or a person took a nibble. And the 'paper' plates have wrinkled a bit, and often have a little reminder written on them.

Do you remember when you decided to learn this craft?
It seems a bit that ceramics itself found me. It happened somewhat accidentally, when I couldn’t decide in which field of art to fulfil myself - sculpture or environmental art. By chance, I came across the basics of ceramics, ans since that moment constantly been interested in the field.
Tell us about tradition and innovation in your work!
The tradition goes through everything - the knowledge of ceramics is passed from one generation to the next with the guidance of the Academy’s professors. Innovation comes with a lot of practical work - quite inadvertently I find more convenient ways to do particular things when I create more and more works in ceramics.
What is one thing that people usually don’t know about your work?
For the most part, people who are not personally familiar with ceramics think that all a ceramicist does is work on a pottery wheel. But it is so much more.
Do you consider your craft to be endangered?
I would like to think no, and hope that in the future people will continue to appreciate art and ceramic works created with love and care despite the growing supply of ceramic products produced by factories.
