Laure Kasiers

Textile creator

Rugs for your imagination

  • Laure handcrafts rugs using her personal technique
  • She draws inspiration from nature viewed through a microscope
  • She uses eco-friendly threads and recycled fibres

After wanting to learn a more hands-on craft than Graphic Design, Laure Kasiers enrolled in Textile Design. She made her first rug over ten years ago when she was expecting her first child. As she had to work a lot from home, she developed her own technique to create innovative surfaces and ended up creating three prototypes for her graduation. Ever since her initial introduction to textiles, Laure has always concentrated on thick and dense material – fit for upholstery rather than lace. The idea of creating a textile that was the object in itself and not a textile that will be incorporated into another object was central. Since then, inspired by natural shapes, patterns, structures and colours, she has created a variety of rugs and tapestry.

When did you open your own workshop?
In 2007, after I received my diploma, I exhibited with other young graduates and I received great exposure and instantly secured two orders. This encouraged me to open my own workshop and a few years later I bought all the machines required to be able to complete the whole process at home.
What do you enjoy most about making rugs?
I love how diverse I can be with my creations and the twinkle in the eyes of my clients when they receive their unique piece. The rugs are a blend of art, craft and design: the patterns are created by the structure itself as if I was drawing with the material.
How important is innovation for your pieces?
Creating a rug is a very ancient tradition, but I want to give it a contemporary interpretation. I do this by using my own technique that I developed and perfected over the years of assembling trimmed fringes to create a unique shape and pattern.
What does ‘well-made’ mean to you?
Each of my pieces is handcrafted to perfection. But I think that today for something to be well made, we need to also consider consciousness about the environment by keeping in mind the sourcing of the materials, its recyclability and reusability.
Laure Kasiers is a master artisan: she began her career in 2007 and she started teaching in 2009
