Cabinetmaker | Nieul Sur L'autise, France

Dynamism and modernity in cabinetry

  • Julien principally uses wood, but also carbon fibre at times
  • His furniture pieces are expressions of his imagination
  • He combines traditional know how with modern materials

"I design my pieces like paintings. They are made to embellish a place and tell a story." Julien Lachaud’s works are the result of his imagination. He also works on commission, enjoying the balance of freedom and constraint that it brings. His is an artistic universe that combines solid traditional know how in cabinetry with the innovation of new materials, light and futuristic. Julien works with elements that are not usually seen in cabinetry. The results are unique, dynamic and modern furniture pieces, furnishings and accessories. Passionate about sport, speed and cars, Julien conveys these interests in the pieces that he crafts, and his creations seem to embody movement despite being solid and static.

What are your sources of inspiration?
I love very much the forms of aerodynamics and speed. So I am inspired at times by things that are tapered, pointed, long. I also love classic lines and the rules that this craft imposes in its own way. In respecting them I can experiment with new lines.
What do you most like about your profession?
The fact that I can give free rein to my imagination. The best moment is when I see that a customer is happy with the work I have done: not only have I interpreted the commission accurately, but my creativity is appreciated.
What does restoring mean to you?
Obviously my creativity in this area is reduced, but restoring is like doing exercises of solfeggio. It is never boring – on the contrary, it is always useful to review the principles of traditional know how. In my work I use ancient techniques.
What do most people not understand about your craft?
Certainly the time each job requires. People do not realise the great difficulty in finding materials, which are even greater today. The material is important because it gives value to the work and therefore it is an important part.
