Millinery is like sculpture for Judy Bentinck. She uses traditional techniques and materials with unique designs to create wearable hat masterpieces. With experience since the early 2000s, Judy has created her own world of bespoke hats that enchant with delicate creativity and detailed sewing. Having opened her workshop in January 2003, Judy’s approach to millinery is characterised by a passion for the craft, a readiness to grow, and constant mastering of the skills. True craftsmanship and exquisite detail are at the core of her hat-making. Judy is a founding member of the British Hat Guild. Her creations can frequently be seen at weddings, Royal Ascot, garden parties, and investitures. Mel B, Princess Beatrice, and Anne Reid are among Judy's clients.
Interview
- What is your background?
- I obtained a BA Hons degree in Printed and Woven Textiles at Liverpool College of Art. After that, I worked in theatre costume design for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, and the Royal Opera House. I enrolled in a millinery course in 2000.
- Did you learn your craft from a master?
- Yes, I learned millinery from Rose Cory, MBE Royal Warrant Holder, and the Queen Mother's milliner. I first joined a two-day class with Rose Cory in 2000 and was totally enamoured so decided to train with her for two days a week for two years.
- How would you define what you do?
- I strike a balance between contemporary design and heritage couture skills in creating exquisite hats and headpieces, both ready-to-wear and bespoke pieces. I love that my profession is about making beautiful wearable headwear and meeting a variety of interesting clients.
- Do you train apprentices?
- I do, occasionally. I had four apprentices, of whom three opened their own independent businesses. Among them is Naomi Larh, a London-based artisan who specialises in eco-friendly and ethical headwear for play and practice.
