The elegance of wood veneers

  • Jesús masters the use of wood veneers to make bag accessories and lamps
  • He was driven to his craft by a vision to use wood in unconventional ways
  • His structure-oriented designs are the product of curiosity and experimentation

Transitioning from the auto industry to fashion may seem like a significant leap, but Jesús Pizones' eager and curious mind made it possible. Born and raised in Cádiz within a family of farmers, he opted for a technical degree in Electromechanics of Automotive Vehicles from Sagrada Familia Professional School. During the late 1990s, however, he moved to Madrid where he worked as a parquet installer for 13 years. Jesús relocated to Galicia in 2013 and, inspired by an American wood sculptor, he began to work on the concept of using thin wooden strips to create something new. By 2017, back in Cádiz, Jesús opened his studio JP.4 Artwood, where he uses a unique technique with wood veneers to create versatile lamps and fashion accessories.

When did you begin experimenting with wood veneers?
When I relocated to Galicia, I started working with wooden furniture. I began to experiment with wood veneers to achieve flexibility and curvature for accessories like bracelets, necklaces and purses. I used to sell these during the Christmas craft fairs in Madrid.
What is your particular approach to woodworking?
I love geometry, mathematics and technical and exploded view drawing. I initially pursued electromechanic studies where I learned these. Today, I approach all of my designs in that same way to solve a construction conundrum. I enjoy experimenting and as a self-taught craftsman I have created my own technique and tools.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Mostly from nature and dreams residing in my head. Those days I am able to recall a dream I try to capture them in new designs or built forms. Natural shapes like flower petals or ocean waves will inspire new silhouettes for my works. My wife also plays an important role, by giving me her insights.
What are the characteristic traits of your works?
My work is lightweight to achieve versatility. I like working with American oak and Palo Rojo veneers to obtain these characteristics. I have had the satisfying experience of meeting customers who still have one of my purses in perfect condition, even after years of use.
