Marbler

The endless possibilities of pattern

  • Jemma's paper was used in the ‘Transylvania Florilegium’
  • She uses ancient techniques with modern colours
  • They produce over 60 different designs

Jemma Lewis began her career at a traditional bookbinder in Bath. There she fell in love with the marbled papers used in the bindery and set about learning this craft. She studied with the doyenne of paper marbling Ann Muir. At Jemma’s studio marbling follows a tradition going back hundreds of years. A tray is filled with water and a ‘size’ made from a powdered Carrageenan, a substance derived from an Irish seaweed. Paint is expertly flicked onto the jelly-like surface and teased using a stylus, or combed with rakes with hundreds of fine needles. The result is traditionally produced paper with a 21st century twist – where bright, dramatic colour palettes are often combined with metallic paints.

What are your sources of inspiration?
The changing colours of nature, the intricacies and fine detail in crystals, gems and natural rock formations, there are sources of inspiration all around me! Also the wonderful explosions of dramatic colours in galaxies and nebulas – I absolutely love the NASA Instagram page for inspiration for my ‘Space’ collection!
Does your craft have a long heritage?
How we make marbled papers today follows the same framework that marblers have been using for hundreds of years. The majority of the patterns we create are those which were made popular many centuries ago, such as ‘Turkish Spot’, ‘Stormont’ and ‘Spanish Ripple’.
One thing about your work that people don’t normally know?
People think to match a sheet of marbled paper that we only need to make up one sheet and that is it. In truth it often takes us at least five sheets to get everything balanced correctly and the paints mixed to just the right colour.
Can you tell us a memorable moment in your professional life?
The ‘Transylvania Florilegium’ has a preface written by HRH The Prince of Wales, an advocate for the conservation of plant life of Romania. As a result of the commission, I got to meet him at a private reception and talk to him about the creation of the bespoke marbled papers.
