Irene Durán Navarro and Susana González Sanjuan founded Sai Ceramics in 2021, a coronation of their friendship and extensive knowledge of ceramics. The duo masters meticulous modelling, and focuses their body of work on porcelain sculptures of plants and flowers. In their pieces, Irene and Susana combine Spanish craft tradition and a modern perspective on ceramic heritage. "We are inspired by nature and architecture, and we value experimentation. The porcelain we work with is made using our own formula, which follows historic Chinese techniques that give the material plasticity," they say. Irene and Susana apply their combined values and experiences in the creation of new shapes and textures. "It is important to us that we stay true to the inner nature of the material and the perfection of the botanical wonders that inspire us," the duo explains.
Interview
- Does technology play a role in what you do?
- Irene: The art of ceramics is an ancient means of expression that is deeply rooted and connected to earth. This slow craft, that has changed but little over time, revolves around contact with the material. Beyond electric kilns and potter's wheels, everything continues to be done by hand.
- What are your specialisations?
- Susana: I like to think in 3D, to envision how the piece may look. I give the material different forms and play with glazes to add colour and texture to the pieces. In general, I enjoy exploring and looking for less conventional ways to use materials.
- What was a memorable moment along your professional path?
- Irene: The collective exhibition Ellas Ilustran Botánica stands out among many. In 2024, we were asked to display one of our pieces at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Madrid, and it was a personal dream come true.
- Is there a life lesson you have learned from ceramics?
- Susana: Clay work is a labour of love, care and patience, virtues we learn while waiting for pieces to dry. It also teaches us detachment, as even if we put our heart and soul into a piece, there is always a chance it could break. This only proves that true value lies in the process.
