How is your craft linked to the local region?
The area where I live is known for its nummulitic limestone and as a result stonemasonry was the most popular and practised craft here in Albesti. Over time, however, many have chosen to give up this craft, which is becoming increasingly rare. I am more than happy to still practise it.
What do you love most about your profession?
Probably the fact that no piece of stone resembles each other and the freedom of expression that sculpture offers me. I also love that every time there is a different level of difficulty in my work. Although sometimes it may seem that anyone can do this profession, it requires a lot of experience, effort, dedication and patience.
What is the most difficult aspect of your craft?
I think that the preparation of the raw material is the most difficult, because it requires a lot of physical effort and attention. You can easily endanger your life, especially if you work alone. On the other hand, sculpture and finishing are the pleasant part of the job. Once you do something with pleasure, everything seems easier.
Could your craft be considered in danger?
Yes, I would say so. Generation after generation, young people become less and less interested or do not know the beauty of manual work. Many technologies try to replace what sculptors do, but this does not compare to the work of an artist. I am glad however that there are people who still appreciate authenticity and understand how important it is to keep the tradition.
