Telling stories of beauty and fragility

  • Jennifer started as a painter then fell in love with glass
  • She studied at the cathedral museum in Ely
  • She portrays the flowing journey of life through her use of colours and geometric shapes

Jennifer Hackett was born in South London and studied Archaeology at university. She visited Rome and fell in love with the city, deciding that this was the place for her to settle. Since childhood Jennifer's creative and artistic streak had been evident. She used to paint with oils and it was after attending a glassworking workshop that she discovered her deep affinity for the medium of glass. She trained with Dave Whyman, who facilitated stained glass workshops at the prestigious and historic Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral. In 2014, Jennifer set up her own studio called Glass by Butler. Her artworks are made using the Tiffany technique, combining glass and oil painting, in fractal and geometric shapes, built like a puzzle. "I love to create dragonfly wings in glass. To me, their movement has always been symbolic of the magical process of life and flow," she says.

Why do you love glass so much?
It perfectly represents beauty and fragility, two features that characterise our lives and Nature. I believe glass can add depth and luminosity to a room like no other medium.
What is your source of inspiration?
The essence of human life, Nature and the importance to protect and preserve them. Glass is a powerfully visceral material to express the fragility of so many things.
Why is your craft so special?
Making stained glass is like weaving a tapestry, through minute hand movements and perseverance. Every final composition involves hundreds of tiny pieces of cut and foiled glass in a ritual that remembers experiences of the past.
What is your link with territory?
I love Rome, its history and heritage of artistic beauty. My colour palette and geometric style are directly inspired by Roman mosaic patterns and repeated tiling.
