Claire Coles studied applied arts with a focus on ceramics and textiles at Middlesex University. Deeply inspired by how people live in and personalise their homes, Claire gravitated towards bringing art into interior design. With a passion for textiles and wallpaper, she has developed her own mural techniques over the years, creating richly textured artworks. Claire combines papers, silks, and leathers, often incorporating appliqué and freehand embroidery as well as painting to bring her designs to life. Her work blends floral patterns with movement. "I love to collaborate closely with my clients, to create bespoke pieces that reflect their unique vision," she says. Claire's designs span across various mediums, including fashion prints, packaging, ceramics, and wallpapers.

How did you get started in your craft?
During university, I worked on a project sewing together different wallpapers. Back then, vintage wallpapers were easier to find and quite affordable. I was intrigued by how each pattern reflected its era and how beautifully they blended together.
Where do you source the materials for your artworks?
I am always on the lookout for unique wallpapers, papers, fabrics, and leathers, ideally in large quantities, as smaller amounts do not stretch far in my work. For these treasures, I regularly visit boot sales and charity shops, and I also search online extensively to find just the right materials.
How can readers acquire your artwork?
In my online shop, I offer prints of my designs, so it is worth browsing. I also share examples of commissioned work. If someone is considering a larger mural or custom piece, I invite them to contact me directly to discuss ideas and preferences.
Is there a particular home that inspires you?
A home that inspires me is Kettle's Yard in Cambridge. I visited it often during my studies and still return regularly. This house was home to H.S. Jim Ede, a Tate Gallery curator, and his wife Helen from 1957 to 1973. They created a space that combines elegant living with a cozy atmosphere, inviting visitors to engage with the art personally.
