Cabinetmaker

Art to live with

  • Laurent has been a cabinetmaker since the age of 15
  • He has a large showroom attached to his workshop
  • Burnt timber cladding is one of his specialist techniques

Laurent Passe is a French master craftsman who specialises in making kitchens and furniture using reclaimed wood and upcycled materials. His expertise lies in traditional methods of working with wood, metal and stone to create bespoke high-end pieces. His passion and respect for all things worn and used stem back to his youth, when his parents were antique dealers. “I prefer old wood for its energy and its history,” claims Laurent. “My intention is to bring extra soul to it through the filter of creativity and traditional artisanal techniques.” Laurent often turns to the shou sugi ban method of staining and protecting wood by fire. The essence of his craft is to bring art and beauty together. Over the years, Laurent has been featured in many publications and even in a national TV programme.

How did you make your career choice?
My parents were antique dealers. My father was an expert in medieval objects for auction houses. I grew up in an environment that always appreciated the value of old, even worn items. I love wandering through flea markets in my region in search of treasures.
How do you represent tradition and innovation in your practice?
I reinterpret the classics of Provençal furniture with a contemporary design using reclaimed wood, and with my personal approach. The design must embody a few essential principles: clean lines, a grounded presence with a sense of lightness, and harmony in proportions.
Which piece is your favourite and why?
At the 2023 Révélations salon in Paris, I presented a pantry called "Lo Manjadou." Weighing nearly 300 kg, the piece has a brutalist and massive appearance. It features ventilation openings on the front that add a contemporary touch while reflecting the furniture's function.
Do you use specific techniques?
I do not really use any specific techniques, but each gesture must adapt to working with antique wood and all its inherent constraints.
