Sleek designs in minimalist silver

  • Ana has lived in London since 1996
  • Her designs are a spin on traditional geometry
  • She makes tableware sets and objects out of silver

In her early twenties, life was an open road for Ana Meneses. “I had always known I wanted to pursue something where I could work with my hands and express my creativity, but I had not yet found the right path. As I approached 24, a friend suggested I explore options at a local art and design college,” she says. Ana enrolled and explored three courses: Blacksmithing, 2D Design, and Jewellery Making. “Jewellery making was different. It captivated me from the very beginning and sparked a deep interest. It became clear to me that this was the path I wanted to pursue,” she explains. “I love working with precious metal, shaping it. I really enjoy the whole process, from designing to transforming ideas into 3D objects in sterling silver.” Today, Ana is a creative silversmith, working not only on jewellery pieces but on silver objects such as luxury tableware and decoration.

Could you explain your preference for minimalist aesthetics?
In my work, minimalism is not just an aesthetic choice. It is a reflection of my creative identity, as both a designer and a maker. My design thinking revolves around simplicity and playful manipulation of geometric forms, where balance is achieved through the deliberate imbalance of shapes and sections.
How does this impact your work?
This approach results in pieces characterised by unusual angles and asymmetrical arrangements that define the entire design. Each piece I create is an exploration of spatial dynamics, where every element, no matter how subtle, contributes to the overall impact.
Do your technique and personality go hand in hand?
As a maker, my ethos is rooted in traditional handmade silversmithing techniques, which are essential to my work. Techniques such as scoring, soldering, creating hinges, and working with flat surfaces are not only methods, but also integral to expressing my artistic concept.
How has living in the UK influenced your work?
Silversmithing in the UK is a craft rich in history, dating back to medieval times. The UK has produced some of the finest silverwork in the world, with a legacy of craftsmanship and a home for renowned silversmiths and prestigious companies throughout its history.
