Multidimensional mosaic in motion

  • Rozenn uses mosaic techniques in innovative ways to craft sculptures and installations
  • Her cement and glass sculptures evoke rhythm and movement
  • She often collaborates with decorators and other artisans

Rozenn Alapetite crafts innovative works of contemporary decorative art that combine sculpture and mosaic. Born in Paris, Rozenn grew up in the French countryside, where she became adept in the tools and techniques of woodworking, carpentry, metalwork and mechanics by observing her father and grandfather. After studying applied arts and teaching, Rozenn tried out woodworking and artisanal cutlery making before working with the mosaicist Christine Dalibert as an apprentice and collaborator. Over years of experimentation, Rozenn developed her own style and methods to create unique mosaic sculptures. Her work is frequently exhibited in Paris, Albi and across France. She also offers regular workshops and classes in traditional and new mosaic techniques.

What is your process to create such unique works?
I have never liked doing the same thing twice, so my process varies a lot. I apply mosaic techniques in new ways, using cement, glass and slate, and sometimes moulded wood from a cabinetmaker. I use a broad range of tools to sculpt, cut and shape sculptures with textural contrasts that evoke movement.
How do you manage to show movement with such solid materials?
The contrast between shiny glass and matte materials like cement or slate creates an effect of light that glints, or a vibration that moves across the piece. This constant 'movement' is more visible in real life, and in videos accessible on my Instagram page, than in static photos.
How did you develop your eclectic skills?
Growing up on a rural property that my parents were renovating, I spent my childhood observing and learning to use equipment in the family workshop and scouring the castle ruins in our yard for artifacts. I love tools, and to this day, I am happiest in a hardware store!
Do you share your techniques?
Training is one of my passions, so bringing this together with art is natural. I offer a variety of regular classes and short-term workshops, including in a juvenile prison. I also collaborate with interior designers and other artisans to exchange methods and create together.
