Carati Ambrogio
Bronzesmith

Keeping bronze in the family

  • The Carati family workshop was founded in 1894
  • It specialises in furniture and accessories in brass and bronze
  • The city of Milan awarded it the title of Historical Workshop

Ambrogio Carati’s workshop was originally founded by Ambrogio’s grandfather Enrico in 1894. It is now run by Ambrogio and his two sons, Ernesto and Francesco. “This has been a family business for four generations,” says Ernesto. “I learned the different manufacturing techniques from my father and master Ambrogio. I don't remember exactly when I thought about starting this craft. I simply went naturally from playing with my first welded pieces when I was little more than a child, to making my first complete and functional objects as a boy. I was always passionate about drawing and when I realised that I could materially accomplish what I planned on paper, I started to create my first small projects.”

How important is tradition in your craft?
Our craft is traditional in our area and has evolved over time according to the needs of our customers. The best results are still obtained through the use of classic techniques. Technology does not bring great improvements in terms of quality but helps us by speeding up some processes.
What aspect of your profession do you love the most?
I particularly love the fact that although I come from a world of classic creations, time after time we are asked to study and prototype many different objects, not just furnishing accessories. This craft is very varied, and I never know what my next project will be.
What don't people realise about your work?
People think that, being a bronze artist, I make sacred furnishings and funerary art. In fact, I have very rarely worked in these fields and generally my production concerns indoor and outdoor furniture, and everything metallic that we have at home.
Is there a memory you are most proud of?
When I was given the MAM Maestro d'Arte e Mestiere award: an unexpected but very welcome honour. I remember with great pleasure that afternoon at the Triennale with my family and children. I was very proud of what I do with my traditions and my father's teachings – in short, of my work.
Ernesto Carati is a master artisan: he began his career in 1988 and he started teaching in 1995
