Begüm Karadağ, an interior designer, founded Büruz Design to save the handwoven art of her father’s native Karacakılavuz neighborhood in Süleymanpaşa, Tekirdağ. Büruz, which is Turkish for 'bringing to light', is a workshop that works with locally-sourced materials to celebrate a centuries-old form of weaving, and prevent it from dying out. The wool yarns used to produce home textiles are dyed entirely with plants such as acorns and walnuts, while the traditional hand looms are made of oak.
The Karacakılavuz weaving technique belongs to the Tekirdağ province and is a protected heritage, which means that every object crafted by Büruz Design must be made in the atelier's own workshop in Tekirdağ. Beyond preserving the craft and revitalising it through modern designs, the pioneering team also empowers local craftswomen by providing them with financial independence and social security through employment.
