Vase with Snowflake and Floral Sarasa Pattern

This vase by Imaemon Imaizumi XIV was decorated using sumi-hajiki, a resist technique in which patterns drawn with ink against a coloured background remain white after firing. The artist also used yukibana sumi-hajiki, an evolution of the technique, that creates subtle white-on-white patterns. Contrasting the deep indigo produced by wood firing with delicate white patterns and a shimmering platinum glaze, the piece explores transparency through layers of colour.
