This chair by The Vernacular Modern features traditional Mysuru inlay by Suresh Mohan. It brings together more than six local timber species from the Deccan Plateau, celebrating their natural grain, texture and colour. A serpent coils around the backrest, while the brass-clad swivel base draws on the form of an elephant’s foot. Bringing together the Nāga, or serpent, and the Mysuru inlay tradition, the piece reflects on two legacies at risk. It suggests that the disappearance of both species and craft entails the loss of distinct ways of understanding the world.
