Ayyanar Guardian Horses

These sculptures by Rajka were hand coiled from wild clay as continuous forms. The surface patterning and regalia were integrated into the construction before firing. Created as votive offerings made to Ayyanar, the guardian deity of Tamil Nadu's villages, the pieces are traditionally placed at the village boundary. They embody the belief that the deity rides out at night to protect the community from harm.
