Emabele pot; Gege vase; Tfwala vase

These vases by Quazi Design were created from discarded newspaper, which was turned into a pulp, dyed with charcoal pigment, and shaped into form. Once sundried, the surface was coated with eco varnish. Emabele and Gege, characterised by thorn-like humps, are interpretations of the spike-covered African pot. The spikes were traditionally designed to deter handling and protect the spiritual medicine that was inside the sacred vessel. Tfwala symbolises responsibility, strength and support. The term translates as 'to carry' or ‘to bear’, and is used to refer to someone who is dependable and who can sustain burdens.
