This piece is a clay sculpture with multiple blooming layers and is glazed in a matte black glaze. The repetitive horizontal layers capture the lotus’ movement upwards, while the choice of black glaze is an ode to the clay tones of ancient Kerma pottery in Sudanese Nubia.
