Reviving the letterpress as a comtemporary tool
Letterpress de Paris' practice is about keeping one of printing’s oldest gestures alive: ink, pressure, impression. Born from Gutenberg’s invention of movable type, letterpress once produced all the world’s books, posters and newspapers, before being pushed aside by offset and, later, digital printing. In the workshop of Letterpress de Paris in eastern Paris, that history is not archived, it is pressed daily into new paper projects. Here, metal type and engraved plates meet thick cotton stocks, where ink sits dense and the press bites into the surface, leaving a tactile shadow of the image. Imperfection is part of the signature language of the atelier.
Working with illustrators, designers, cartoonists and graffiti artists, Letterpress de Paris treats historic presses as contemporary tools rather than relics. Its stationery collection includes cards, notebooks and other printed objects, which are celebrated as acts of experimentation. Alongside this work, commissioned printing projects keep the presses running and bring additional techniques such as foiling into play, anchoring a centuries-old approach in the present day.
