Wooden figurines with a past life

  • Humans are at the centre of Laurent's carved sculptures
  • His pieces intentionally feature visible chainsaw marks
  • He exclusively works with local recovered wood

Laurent Turping worked in the luxury hospitality field for 20 years, before turning to wood carving. Returning to Luxembourg with his wife, he had to find a profession of his own. While cutting down a tree at his mother-in-law's house, holding a chainsaw for the first time, Laurent shaped a human head into the leftover trunk for fun. “Since then, chainsaw wood carving has become my language,” he says. Laurent developed his skills under a renowned wood sculptor in Germany. Today, he exhibits his works internationally. His human silhouettes are carved from local wood species found lying in the forest, never felled intentionally. Laurent carves his figurines with the same spontaneity he started his practice with.

Laurent Turping is an expert artisan: he began his career in 2011.

INTERVIEW

I only work with local species, embracing their cracks and flaws. I go looking for my wood in the forest, never from a tree felled on purpose. I only take trees already brought down by storms, out of respect for the material.

I never do a preliminary sketch. The wood itself guides me, based on the cracks or the features visible inside the trunk. I always carve from top to bottom, letting the material influence the shape.

For me, humans are the most interesting subject. I often sculpt groups, couples or families, symbolising the bond between people. Clients sometimes give their sculpture a first name, which I find delightful.

Once a sculpture is finished, I have three options: I leave it natural, I apply oil that preserves its raw appearance or I paint it black. Even when applying colour, I never cover the piece entirely: natural wood always remains visible.
