Chris Wilson's childhood ambition to become a professional artist ultimately led him to the intricate world of woodcarving. After earning degrees in fine arts and developing traditional sculpting techniques, he found his true calling. “It is my dream and I am living it," Chris says. "My pieces come from the soul and I am really passionate about what I do." Through his practice, he challenges himself to master new concepts. In his Emerging series, he depicts birds struggling to escape from their wooden confines. Chris' pieces feature a multitude of styles, from hyperrealism to impressionism and abstraction. He is a multi award-winning sculptor, and his pieces feature in collections across the USA.
INTERVIEW
I was inspired originally by Michelangelo’s Slaves. I wanted to show the birds struggling to get away from the material they are carved from. Through the series, I shed light on human and wildlife struggles.
I love it when my pieces resonate with people who have a personal connection to animals and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Their shared stories and desire to protect these creatures give me hope that we can safeguard wildlife for future generations.
My family introduced me to both art and the natural world. My grandfather was an artist: he exposed me to great museums and taught me to draw. My other grandfather was a biologist: he taught me how to observe lizards, snakes and birds.
Nature inspires me. I like to carve from a single piece of material, which I forage myself from the woods. I spend a long time observing the wood I find, until I see a bird or animal ready to emerge from within it.
