Changkyun Han fully makes use of bamboo's dual nature of wood and grass, by creating objects with a mix of techniques from woodworking and straw working. He built a deep foundation in interpreting materials from multiple perspectives through traditional apprenticeships with masters in wood furniture making, straw mat weaving and bamboo hat weaving. Changkyun's works range from small, everyday objects to large-scale installations, through which he explores new applications for the traditional Korean bamboo craft. "I personally tend to bamboo groves in Gokseong and South Korea, and I source the material myself," he says. Through his bamboo craft society, called Changkyun HAN Jukyehoe, he actively shares his knowledge and fosters dialogue. Changkyun ensures that his teaching is rooted in close engagement with bamboo.
INTERVIEW
I undertook traditional apprenticeships with masters in wood, straw and bamboo crafts. By assisting and observing their work, I developed my own methods. Bamboo’s dual nature lets me apply techniques from both wood and straw crafts.
I was drawn to the beauty and resilience of bamboo. It is abundant and easy to work with, as it grows naturally and requires little processing. Its long, flexible yet strong form allows for expressive techniques that other materials cannot achieve. It is an ideal medium for creative exploration.
The bamboo groves I tend to and harvest from are in Gokseong and other southern regions of Korea. I select and grow shoots, as well as thin mature bamboo for use. Because of the region’s small size and stable latitude, the bamboo shows consistent characteristics.
I teach in my bamboo craft society, Changkyun HAN Jukyehoe. The more I come to understand the benefits that bamboo offers, the more I feel compelled to share them with others. I hope to find more companions to explore this path with and help share it with the world.
