Generations of Indian embroidery

Founded by Karishma Swali in 2016, Chanakya School's main goal is to preserve and institutionalise India's embroidery traditions. As both a learning institution and a cultural platform, the school places craft within contemporary creative discourse while addressing social and environmental challenges. More than 1,400 craftswomen have graduated from Chanakya School's educational programme, forming a growing network of artisans, researchers and creative practitioners.

Students are trained in more than 300 hand embroidery techniques alongside weaving, crochet, macramé and textile-based experimentation, combining traditional knowledge with colour theory, design thinking and art history. Collaboration defines Chanakya School's approach, bringing graduates into dialogue with master artisans and artists across disciplines. This collective practice has been presented internationally, including at Frieze London and the Vatican Apostolic Library, extending embroidery beyond fashion and into contemporary art and design.
