A mosaic of mystery and meaning

Mosaic artist Béatrice Serre began her creative practice in France after a nomadic childhood that saw her living in Gabon, China and Brazil. After initially studying tapestry, she discovered mosaic during her studies in Paris and never looked back. Her work is characterised by a daring approach that introduces full minerals and raw stones into her pieces, which include tables, mirrors and lamps as well as decorative artworks. Her most monumental design features in the Cartier flagship store and comprises an Art Deco-styled piece of marble, onyx, travertine and gold enamel tiling.

The mosaic mirror, Il Sole Di Venezia, is presented for Homo Faber 2026. It stands as a tribute to the city of Venice. For Béatrice, the profound echo of its historical importance continues to illuminate the world. The mirror represents the sun in a pastel sfumato, and is created from gold, glass, stones, minerals and precious metals. “Working with these materials opens up a world of possibilities, from ancient Greco-Roman and Byzantine hand-cutting techniques to contemporary and futuristic ones. A hidden treasure lies nestled among the tesserae and rays, the guardian of an eternal treasure. For me, it embodies the mystery of Venice,” she says.
