While completing an art degree at the University of Monterrey, Andrés Anza developed his craft in the workshop of ceramic sculptor Mauricio Cortés, his uncle. "Knowledge passed down through generations allows me to create with purpose," he says. "It forges a genuine connection with the material and makes it a partner that helps shape the final piece." In 2015, Andrés opened his own workshop in San Pedro, Nuevo León. He creates spike-covered sculptures that invite viewers to look closer and discover a living being that seems familiar. "Applying thousands of spikes to my sculptures is as natural as applying thousands of brushstrokes to a canvas, " he says. Together with his wife, Daniela Estrada, Andrés directs MORA, a residency programme that connects emerging international artists with the local craft scene.
