It took some time for David Patchen to embrace glassblowing. For 23 years, the craft was his hobby, practised alongside a corporate career. In 2001, after attending classes at the Pilchuck Glass School and receiving mentorship from Afro Celotto, a renowned master of Murano glass, David turned glassblowing into his full-time occupation. At the core of his artistic practice are the traditional cane and murrine techniques. “My glassblowing approach takes colour in unexpected directions in pursuit of detailed and intricate glass pieces,” he says. David’s objects can be found in private collections, among them Elton John’s, as well as museums and galleries worldwide. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors at Public Glass in San Francisco.
