Located at the centre of Sliema’s shopping hub, Christine X Art Gallery has been in operation since 2004. Boasting a selection of expressionist contemporary figurative paintings by local, European and African artists, it also features the work of local craft artists. Ceramicist and bronze sculptor Amelia Saint George, and Kevin Attard with his silver filigree sculptures are both represented at Christine X Art Gallery. The venue has recently started to showcase traditional and contemporary African art, with sculptures from artist cooperatives in Mali and Burkina Faso.

Located since 2021 in São Bento, Lisbon’s antiques district, the gallery-shop Analora showcases carefully selected and curated pieces. Focusing on ceramics and more, Analora represents Portuguese as well as French and international artists and makers who create strong and elegantly crafted pieces. Anne-Laure Pilet, the gallerist, comes from the demanding advertising sector. She started to develop projects with artists during the six years in which she lived in China before moving to Lisbon. Her gallery provides a refined and discrete setting for decorative treasures with soul.

The city of Arles in the South of France has always attracted famed artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. Today, Arles retains its reputation as a creative hub thanks to its art spaces, such as Galerie Regala, founded in 2019 by Florence Reckinger-Taddeï and Véronique Pieyre de Mandiargues. The gallery itself, perched atop the Roman cryptoporticus, or covered corridor, was designed by Christian Lacroix and currently showcases paintings, sculptures, dolls, textiles and embroidery by contemporary artisans and artists. For each exhibition, the gallery invites its talents to use the entire surrounding space as well as the walls, which makes a visit to Galerie Regala truly exciting.

The Ceramic House was founded in 2011 by architectural ceramicist Kay Aplin. A unique artist’s home, it is a living work of art, adorned with Kay’s large scale tiled installations inside and out. It is a pop-up gallery, artist residency, boutique guesthouse and artist-led project space investigating the intersections between ceramic and sound art practice. It produces an ongoing programme of projects which are ambitious and international in scope. It partners with museums, galleries, universities, residencies and institutions to create exhibitions, installations, publications, films and performance events which extend its reach beyond The Ceramic House and towards the wider international artistic community.

CRAFTkontor is a shop that sells unique pieces and small collections, mainly from German studios and workshops. It is also a gallery that exhibits artists and designers from Germany and Europe in themed or individual exhibitions. CRAFTkontor was founded in 2008 by the art historian Annegret Portsteffen. A new exhibition is presented at least four times a year at CRAFTkontor. Usually, a variety of trades are curated together around a central theme. During the selection process, Ms. Portsteffen places great emphasis on timelessness and quality. For her, the sensuality of materials, their function, their uniqueness and their flawless execution are essential. Among those in the portfolio are Friedemann Bühler, Elke Sada, Karin Bablok, Konrad Koppold, Sonngard Marcks, Cornelius Reer, Ulrike Bühler, Birgit Borstelmann, Martin Mindermann, Hilde Janich and many others.

Homo Faber Guide is a signature project developed by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which was set up in 2016 thanks to the intuition of Franco Cologni and Johann Rupert. The Michelangelo Foundation’s mission is to celebrate and preserve master craftsmanship, and for this reason it has created a map of the most significant representatives in this field, with the aim of connecting all its protagonists: artisans, designers, gallery owners, art curators, collectors and enthusiasts of high-quality handmade pieces.

About the Guide

Are you an artisan, atelier or manufacturer? Would you like to be featured in Homo Faber Guide? The Michelangelo Foundation encourages self-assessment initiatives and is pleased to evaluate new members to appear on the Guide or in other projects. Thanks to the Master’s Touch Evaluation Tool, every artisan can send their application: register and access a questionnaire to see if you fulfill the 11 criteria for excellence that stand behind all the activities of the Michelangelo Foundation. If your answers reach the minimum requirement, your application will be brought to our attention; if, on the contrary, you should score below the minimum requirement, we will give you some points for improvement, in the hope that you may participate in future initiatives of the Michelangelo Foundation.

A master artisan is an accomplished artisan who has been in activity for more than ten years, and who has also been engaged in passing on his or her expertise to the younger generations for more than seven years. This is in keeping with one of the key values of the Michelangelo Foundation: the transmission of knowledge in craftsmanship.

A rising star is an artisan who has been active for less than ten years, and who is capable of expressing his or her craft with competence, creativity and originality. Whether self-taught or trained, the rising star represents the future of craftsmanship, in creativity, concerns and approaches.

Who is a Rising star?

The artisans featured in Homo Faber Guide have been selected through a meticulous assessment process based on the 11 criteria for excellence, identified by Alberto Cavalli, Executive Director of the Michelangelo Foundation, in the volume The Master’s Touch, written with researchers Giuditta Comerci and Giovanna Marchello. The members of the Michelangelo Foundation’s network who have been invited to participate in sourcing artisans for the Guide use an evaluation tool based on these criteria. In this way, they can identify the most suitable artisans to include in the project.
