This wall hanging by Elm Niimi was made by repeatedly applying and polishing layers of lacquer. Silver powder maki-e patterns were drawn beneath the transparent lacquer layers. Appearing circular from the front, with a shifting viewing angle the form reveals relief, subtly altering perception and conveying a sense of immersion.
