Sumo, Volupta

These sculptures by Salomé Cousseau were carved freehand from wood, then hand sanded, stained and waxed. Holes were drilled using jewellery tools, and garnet beads were attached with gold-plated pins through a galvanising process. Expressing softness and fluidity within a solid block of wood, the pieces reveal an inner movement through the tonal variations of their stained, resin-rich surfaces. Suggesting abundance, the beads emerge like buds across the forms.
